2025 Triathlon and Duathlon National Series - Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which 2025 races will count towards the Triathlon and Duathlon National Series?

  • Does My Tri Ranking cost athletes?

    • My Tri Ranking is free for athletes.

  • Do I need to sign up for an account on My Tri Ranking to appear in the Triathlon and/or Duathlon National Series standings?

    • No - signing up for an account on My Tri Ranking is not a required step - you will automatically appear in the National Series once you meet the criteria below. Signing up for a free My Tri Ranking account does allow you to customise your profile page (e.g. add a profile picture & other profile information) though - find out how here.

  • How are the Triathlon and Duathlon National Series standings determined?

    • In the Triathlon National Series, the standings are based on the average of athletes four highest scores in Triathlon National Series events. Athletes must complete at least one sprint and one standard distance race, plus two others of their choice.

    • For the Duathlon National Series, it is an average of athletes score in the National Championships plus their next two highest scores in other Duathlon National Series events.

    • Higher scores = higher position in the standings.

  • How do the Irish Rankings work?

    • The all-in-one Irish Rankings rankings include:

      • Sprint & Standard distance races with separate rankings for triathlon & duathlon.

      • Elite & Age Group athletes

      • Domestic races (including National Series races) & major international races. Please note that for 2024 domestic races, only a few non-national series races are included. In 2025 Triathlon Ireland will endeavour to receive results from as many domestic sanctioned races as possible. The goal is to eventually include every Triathlon Ireland sanctioned sprint / standard distance triathlon and duathlon.

    • Rankings are based on an average of best two scoring performances within the last 12 months. Once a result is more than 12 months old, it ceases to count towards your ranking.

  • How are scores calculated for each race?

    • The same methodology is used for all races - National Series races and the wider set of races in the Irish Rankings.

    • My Tri Ranking gives athletes a score for each race they complete. My Tri Ranking race scores are calculated based on a percentage difference between the athlete's finish time, and a predicted time for the World Number 1* (imagining that the World Number 1 had shown up and competed in the race).

    • Finishing a race in the same time as the predicted time for the World Number 1 gives an athlete 1000 points. A score 10% slower than that time grants 900 points for example. 30% slower would be 700.

    • My Tri Ranking calculates the World Number 1 time using the finish times of athletes in the actual race who are already ranked. These athletes are known as ‘benchmarkers’ and produce multiple independent estimates of the World Number 1s time. Because benchmarkers all took part in the race and experienced the actual race conditions, My Tri Ranking indirectly accounts for all race variables (differences in course length, elevation profile, weather conditions etc). This enables meaningful comparison between different performances on different days.

    • *My Tri Ranking uses the 2023 World Number 1s average level during the 2023 season as the constant. No matter how World Number 1s evolve, scores will forever be relative to this consistent bar. The 2023 World Number 1s were Alex Yee (Men’s Triathlon), Beth Potter (Women’s Triathlon), Mario Mola (Men’s Duathlon) and Emma Pallant-Browne (Women’s Duathlon).

    • For much more information, including on exactly how our algorithms work, please see How the Rankings Work.

  • Why is my National Series standing different to my Irish Ranking?

    • The National Series standings only include members of Triathlon Ireland, and performances in National Series events.

    • The Irish Rankings (sprint & standard distance) include all Irish athletes (age groupers and elites) regardless of their Triathlon Ireland membership status, and include performances in; National Series events, other races in Ireland, World Triathlon international competitions, events in Britain.

  • I’ve competed in a National Series Race but I don’t show up on the National Series standings. Why is this?

    • Whilst all Irish athletes appear in the Irish Rankings regardless of Triathlon Ireland membership status, only active members of Triathlon Ireland appear in the National Series standings. Non-members of Triathlon Ireland who competed in National Series races can become part of the National Series by purchasing Triathlon Ireland membership, so long as they do so before the final race of the season. Please visit www.triathlonireland.com to purchase your membership.

  • It says on my profile I have 'Not Yet' met the National Series criteria. What does that mean?

    • Athletes are marked as 'Series Criteria Met? - 'Not Yet' until they have met the criteria below:

      • To be ranked in the Triathlon National Series – athletes must finish a minimum of four Triathlon National Series races including at least one sprint and one standard distance event.

      • Athletes in the 16-19AG must also compete in four Triathlon National Series races. However, unlike for all other competitors there is no requirement for those in the 16-19AG to finish a standard distance event.

      • To be ranked in the Duathlon National Series – athletes must finish the National Duathlon Championships + a minimum of two other Duathlon National Series events.

  • I have an 'Overall Series Standing' and an 'Overall Eligible Standing' – what’s the difference?

    • The 'Overall Eligible Standing' is your rank among only those athletes who have already met the minimum criteria described above (correct amount of races and hold Triathlon Ireland membership).

    • The 'Overall Series Standing' is your trending rank among all athletes who have competed in at least one National Series event, including those who have not yet met the minimum criteria.

    • After the final race of the season, those who have not met the minimum criterion will be removed leaving only those who met the minimum criteria.

  • I think the age-group showing against my profile is wrong

    • Your age-group is based on your age on the 31st December of the current year. You may be 44 today, but if you will be 45 on the final day of the year – then you will be in the 45-49AG. If you still think your age-group is wrong, please get in touch.

  • What prizes are on offer for the Triathlon and Duathlon National Series?
The overall winners of the Triathlon and Duathlon National Series, along with the winners of each age-group will be awarded at the Triathlon Ireland Annual Awards.

  • How does the Youth Series Work?

    • The Youth Series is a national series for children aged 11 to 17. There are three categories:

      • YNS1 – Ages 11 to 12

      • YNS2 – Ages 13 to 14

      • YNS3 – Ages 15 to 17.

    • For a full list of Youth Series races see: https://www.triathlonireland.com/youth-series/

    • The system for calculating Youth Series scores is unchanged from previous years. The winner of any national Youth Series race is awarded 700 points. Unless it is a Youth National Championships where the winner is awarded 1000 points.

    • The second placed finished athlete is awarded 7.5% less points than the winner (so 647.50 in a normal race). Points decrease by 7.5% with each passing athlete in the top 20, and then 4% thereafter for athletes outside the top 20. Competitors are ranked based on the sum of their highest 3 scores in YouthSeries Events.

    • Those aged 16 & 17 may additionally choose to compete in the Junior National Series which is the 16-19 age-category of the adult National Series.
